What Goes Unstaffed Along US 276 This Winter, and What Stays Open

October 29, 2026

When does Pisgah Forest close for winter? Mostly it doesn't. Over the next five weeks the corridor north of the US 276 and US 64 intersection loses staff, flush toilets, shelter reservations and weekend office hours. Nearly all of the ground you walk, ride and fish on stays open. The only stop on the corridor that is gone for more than a season is the one at the end of FR 475, and it has nothing to do with the weather.

Mid-November takes the staffed stops off the byway first

The first round of changes falls in mid-November. The Forest Service's seasonal closures list for the Pisgah Ranger District says the Cradle of Forestry closes for the season "Mid November" and stays closed until the first Saturday in April. The same window closes the restrooms at Pink Beds and Coontree. Pink Beds also stops taking shelter reservations. At Sycamore Flats, the picnic shelter restrooms stay open and the restrooms at the far end of the loop close.

The Pisgah Ranger District office at 1600 Pisgah Highway changes hours on a fixed date. Through November 15 it keeps its peak-season schedule of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Starting November 16 it is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday only, and closed on federal holidays. Starting that weekend, there's nobody at the district desk on a Saturday to answer a question about a trail or a road. If you need a map or have a question for the district, the last weekend to stop in is November 14 and 15. Phone calls to (828) 866-3437 follow the same weekday schedule.

End of November moves the change to the campgrounds

The second round comes at the end of November and lasts until mid-March. Here too, the sites stay usable while the services go away.

  • Sunburst Campground closes completely for the season.
  • Lake Powhatan stays fully open for camping. Day use is also open, with no fees and no restrooms.
  • North Mills River Campground keeps only Roadside Loop sites 1 through 13 open. There are no reservations, campers pay at the fee tube, and day use runs with no fees and no restrooms.

The Forest Service lists Davidson River Recreation Area as open year-round, which matters more than anything else on the calendar for people who live nearby. Sliding Rock follows the same pattern. Lifeguards and restrooms are there only from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Outside that window the slide stays open when weather and water levels allow, with no lifeguards and the restrooms closed. The seasonal list describes it as "not staffed, but accessible" from Labor Day weekend to Memorial Day weekend.

Here's the full sequence in one place:

When What changes What stays
Mid-November Cradle of Forestry closes until the first Saturday in April US 276 and the trailheads along it
Mid-November Restrooms close at Pink Beds and Coontree; Pink Beds stops taking shelter reservations Sycamore Flats picnic shelter restrooms
November 16 Ranger District office goes to weekdays only, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Weekday office hours
End of November Sunburst Campground closes Lake Powhatan camping and day use, without restrooms
End of November North Mills River drops to Roadside Loop sites 1 to 13, no reservations Day use, without restrooms or fees
Year-round Sliding Rock is unstaffed from Labor Day to Memorial Day Davidson River Recreation Area; Sliding Rock access when weather and water allow

The closures that don't follow the calendar

The seasonal list shows what the Forest Service closes each winter on purpose. A second list, on the Forest Service's Hurricane Helene recovery page, last updated October 1, 2026, shows what is still closed from storm damage, whatever the month. Yellow Gap Road, FS 1206, is open from US 276 near the Cradle to Wolf Ford Horse Camp. It is closed from Wolf Ford on to North Mills River Campground. Courthouse Creek Road, FS 140, and Pilot Mountain Road, FS 229, are listed as closed for storm damage. Turkey Pen Road, FS 297, has limited access while repairs continue.

So on a December drive toward North Mills River, the gap on Yellow Gap Road is a Helene closure, and the recovery page gives no reopening date for it. The closures that come with winter are the ones on the seasonal list.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is the other road to check. The National Park Service's road status page on October 23, 2026, listed both sections next to the US 276 junction at Wagon Road Gap as open: Pisgah Store to US 276, and US 276 to north of Graveyard Fields. That page is a daily snapshot and says conditions can change. Once the weather turns, check it the morning you go.

The hatchery stop is gone for longer than one winter

For years, the turn off US 276 onto FR 475 meant raceways full of trout and an indoor exhibit space. Both are closed for a different reason than everything above. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission began a major renovation of the Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery in 2026. Its project FAQ says the hatchery building and raceways will be demolished and rebuilt in the same footprint, which "requires the entire facility to close during construction."

The scale explains why this is more than a seasonal closure. WLOS reported in January that the renovation costs $50 million and that, for the first time in more than 40 years, Setzer was completely empty of fish. Its broodstock and the trout scheduled for stocking went to Armstrong State Fish Hatchery and to Glady Fork Fish Hatchery, a Transylvania County facility the commission bought to add capacity. Setzer is the state's largest trout hatchery. It has run since the late 1950s, first as a national fish hatchery, and the state has operated it since 1983.

NCWRC expects the renovation to be finished by late 2027 or early 2028. It also says stocking numbers will start returning to normal in 2028, and it may be 2030 before the hatchery is fully back to normal production. For anglers on the Davidson River and nearby stocked waters, the commission has said stocking during construction will be compressed into peak periods. That means spring for Hatchery Supported and Delayed Harvest waters, and fall for Delayed Harvest waters.

When the site reopens, it will look different. In a June report from WLOS, a commission spokesperson said the rebuilt hatchery will have new public restrooms next to the parking lot, fish viewing, and educational signs around the site. The commission also confirmed that the former wildlife education building will not be rebuilt. The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education board had voted against rebuilding it after Tropical Storm Fred destroyed it.

More orange on the trails from mid-November

The forest also gets busier in a different way as the staff thins out. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission's 2026–2027 season dates for Transylvania County deer are:

  1. Archery: September 12 to November 13, 2026
  2. Blackpowder: November 14 to November 27, 2026
  3. Gun: November 28, 2026, to January 1, 2027

The Mountain Bear Management Unit season runs October 3 to November 21, 2026, closes, then reopens December 12, 2026, through January 1, 2027. The commission has encouraged non-hunters using game lands, including hikers and birders, to wear blaze orange during these seasons. Blackpowder season starts November 14, the same weekend the ranger desk keeps its last Saturday hours. Gun season opens the Saturday after Thanksgiving, right as the campground changes take effect.

The November dates still on the calendar

The Cradle has one more evening scheduled before it closes. FIND Outdoors lists Gazers of the Galaxy for Friday, November 6, 2026, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. It's an astronomer-led night of sky viewing with telescopes, ticketed and limited to 60 people. The Cradle's November programming also includes ecoEXPLORE Mammalogy Month.

Oskar Blues Brevard, at the bottom of the corridor, has three dates lined up in the same stretch:

Taken together, the next two weeks are the last stretch to see the Cradle before its mid-November closing, and November 15 is the last day the district desk is open on a weekend until spring. After that, the trailheads, Davidson River and Lake Powhatan's campsites stay open, without the staff or the restrooms.

At Petit Properties, we keep track of these dates because a lot of our neighbors plan their winters around this corridor. If you're thinking about a home in Pisgah Forest and want to know which roads and stops near a particular property stay open all year, we're glad to go through it with you.
